— Gonzalo Palafox, a 10th grader at Sunnyside High School, spent a week working as a page for the Washington State Senate at the Capitol in Olympia.

Palafox was one of 12 students who served as Senate pages for the first week of the 2019 legislative session.

He was sponsored by 15th Legislative District Sen. Jim Honeyford who serves Grandview, Selah, Sunnyside and Toppenish.

“Gonzalo did a great job paging for the Senate. He quickly assumed a leadership role among his peers, and when it came time for their mock committee, he served as a chair and spoke on the majority of his bill,” Honeyford said. “I’m glad he enjoyed his week here and encouraged him to keep learning about the legislative process.”

The Senate Page Program is an opportunity for Washington students to spend a week working in the Legislature. Students are responsible for transporting documents between offices, as well as delivering messages and mail.

Pages spend time in the Senate chamber and attend page school to learn about parliamentary procedure and the legislative process. Students also draft their own bills and participate in a mock committee.

“I will always remember the support I got to come here, I come from a low-income family, and getting here was hard, but it was worth it,” Palafox said.

He added that his favorite part of the program was meeting his senator.

Palafox, 15, enjoys helping and meeting new people.

He is the son of Teodoro and Linda Flores of Outlook.
