Parking in front of post office to be revised

The Sunnyside City Council did not have to give its approval for a parking revision on East Edison Avenue in front of the post office but decided to put the issue to a vote at Monday’s meeting.

Unanimous consent was given to City Manager Don Day regarding the issue.

Present for the meeting were Mayor Julia Hart, and council members John Henry, Ron Stremler and Dean Broersma.

The discussion regarding safety for motorists took place as the City Council members were receiving staff reports.

Day said the parking issue in front of the post office has been a problem for many years.

Staff provided council members a couple options at a previous meeting, including angled and parallel parking to ease the flow of traffic.

Broersma said he recognizes there will be community members unhappy with parallel parking, but people often get through the 4-way stop and hold up traffic while waiting for a parking space to open.

“Curbs were in place to prevent issues,” Day said of the location’s design when he first started working for the city.

There was a traffic light at the corner of East Edison Avenue and South Seventh Street that was removed when the downtown corridor was changed for revitalization efforts. Now, there is a 4-way stop.

Day said there have been arguments the current parking is better for handicapped individuals, but the post office is not handicap accessible.

The parking lot adjacent to the post office is also safer, he said.

“People will get used to it,” he said of the parking revision.

Day said another option would be to limit diagonal parking to small vehicles.

“We need to take action,” he said.

There was no disagreement in regard to the public’s response, everyone acknowledging “… there will be blow back.”

However, the overwhelming concern is for safety, and the council decided to take action to “share” the blame.
