Welcome and thanks for parade weekend

Julia Hart

I am so excited, I can barely contain myself.

It’s parade weekend in Sunnyside. You know — the Sunnyside Lighted Farm Implement Parade weekend of events.

I’m getting ready and I hope you are as well, for the official 6:30 p.m. lighting of the Centennial Square Christmas tree Thursday night. The tree lighting kicks off the weekend activities. I’ll be there to thank the Valley Performing Arts Center for decorating our city center tree and for leading the caroling.

There are so many partners to thank for helping to bring together the event, now marking its 30th anniversary. It is truly more than a parade of lit hay balers and grape harvesters. It’s a spectacular parade celebrating our roots as an agriculture-based community and our diversity, which makes Sunnyside a great place to live.

The Lighted Farm Implement Parade was the first of its kind in the nation and is still No. 1 in the country, in my humble opinion.

Many thanks to the volunteers, from the Sunnyside Noon Rotary Club for spearheading the main event to the Sunnyside Special Events Committee for the organization of the fifth annual Lighted Children’s Parade, a welcome and fun addition to the weekend.

Thanks to the Astria Sunnyside Hospital Foundation for moving its premier fundraiser to parade weekend, adding glamour to the weekend celebration.

We must thank all the food, hot cocoa vendors, the entertainers and tree decorators, who throw all their creativity into making Parade weekend such a huge three-day, family-friendly and visitor-worthy event.

My family and friends have watched from the sidelines and from the center of organization parade floats.

I highly recommend both watching and participating.

So, welcome to Sunnyside’s official opening of the Christmas holiday season. I hope to see you at each of the events planned and, especially at the parade.

(Editor’s note: See the calendar of events listed in the Christmas in the Valley section).
