— It’s been nearly a week, and an arrest hasn’t been made in the investigation into a gang-related shooting across the street from Sunnyside High School.

At about 2:45 p.m. Sunnyside police were alerted by people who reported hearing shots fired in the 700 block of South 16th Street.

“Several juveniles were running from the scene,” Chief Al Escalera said.

The end of the school day was about 20 minutes before the shots rang out.

Escalera said there was just one shot.

“No one was injured and there was no property damage,” he said.

But police are taking the incident seriously.

“There was a significant law enforcement presence,” Escalera said, noting there many juvenile witnesses.

Because of the proximity to the school, the School Resource Officers were integral to the response and ensuing investigation, he said.

They secured the campus before helping conduct interviews of the juvenile victims and witnesses, Escalera said.

“It’s a very alarming case,” he said.

“The SROs were trusted and known by the juveniles,” Escalera said, emphasizing the significance of the role the School Resource Officers played in getting information for investigators from the street crimes unit.

There were individuals with information, describing the suspect(s) in the shooting, Escalera said without elaborating as to how many are believed to be responsible.

Officers weren’t able to locate anyone matching the description provided, and the Chief of Police said the investigation is still ongoing.

Anyone with information regarding the shooting is urged to call 509-836-6200.

The Daily Sun News will provide additional information related to the case as it becomes available.
