Poetry event coming to college campus

— Yakima Valley College will host its annual Black Box Poetry Slam on Thursday, May 17.

The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the college’s Park Room of the Deccio Higher Educational Center, Building 8, on the main college campus.

Doors open at 6 p.m. for aspiring poets who want to participate, officials said.

There is an admission fee, which will be used as prize money for the Top 3 artists of the night. All forms of spoken word are welcome, organizers said, noting performers are expected to have five pieces prepared.

The time limit for each is 3 minutes, officials said.

“Yakima is catching on to slam poetry,” event organizer and English instructor Mark Fuzie said. “They’re starting to catch on that it’s not a ‘dead poets society,’ that the voices in slam are passionate, new, and right now.”
