We are not destined to helplessness

Religious Reflections

Jesus said, “The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy; I am come that they may have life, and they may have it more abundantly.” (John 10:10)

What did he mean by this?

I think he was likening the thief to Satan who would steal our sense of spirituality and try to convince us that we are mortal and must die and be destroyed.

Satan is always trying to teach us that we are under material laws, subject to sin, sickness and death, and that we are helpless to do anything about it!

What a lie!

God’s laws save and heal and give us eternal life.

Jesus led a life of destroying what Satan or error would have us believe.

Did he leave the blind to stay blind, the cripple to stay lame, the dead to cease living? No!

And, he told us, “He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also.” (John 14:12)

Wow! It is fairly clear here that he didn’t expect us to bow down to imperfection and mortality. He wanted us to know that if we understood the dominion that God gives us, we, too, could cast out devils or errors as he did.

God gave us dominion (Genesis 1:26) and assured us in verse 31 that everything He made was good and that He was satisfied with it.

Does this sound like a God who would have us bow down to disease and death?

In 1866, a New England woman, Mary Baker Eddy, discovered, through a 3-year diligent study of the Bible, the divine laws that cast out errors of every kind, and she shared what she found with others, teaching them these divine laws so they could free themselves from false material laws.

She also explained in a book, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, that everyone can demonstrate God’s laws of health and harmony.

She wrote, “God has endowed man with inalienable rights, among which are self-government, reason and conscience. Man is properly self-governed by his Maker, divine truth and love.”

What a relief to know that our God is ever available to help us be free, healthy and whole!

These truths are being demonstrated every day by individuals who practice them and turn to God understandingly. God’s laws are supreme and when utilized, cast out any error that would bind and afflict us.

Thank you, God, for creating us in your image, perfect, joyous, whole and eternal!
