Man shot to death, police to patrol more

— Spurred by a homicide Friday and increasing violence in recent weeks, the Sunnyside Police Department will increase patrols of the community, Cmdr. Scott Bailey announced Saturday.

Bailey said the homicide took place at about 11.45 p.m. An unknown gunman, with an assault rifle, opened fire on “what was apparently party” in the 500 block of S. 15th Street, he said.

“Upon arrival, officers encountered numerous victims and witnesses,” Bailey said. The attacker killed a 23-year-old man and wounded four other people.

The wounded did not have life-threatening injuries, Bailey said. They were treated at area hospitals and released.

“The event had the appearance of a family gathering with blow-up water slide and remnants of a water balloon fight,” Bailey said. “It was clearly evident that small children were present at the residence when the shooting occurred.”

Police continue their investigation and urge anyone with any information at all that could be helpful in identifying a suspect to contact the department at 509-836-6200.

At the same time, Sunnyside police continue to investigate a shooting that took place last Monday in the 600 block of N. 4th Street. They are seeking similar assistance from the public.

“Due to the escalation of violent events over the past couple weeks, the Sunnyside Police Department is adding extra patrols to increase officer presence in the community,” Bailey said.
