Daisy Hernandez, 16, is a kind and helpful young lady.
She is one of 11 girls vying for the 2018-19 Miss Sunnyside title.
The daughter of Mauricio and Maria Hernandez, she loves drawing, hiking, working with kids and showing spirit for her school.
She is involved in pep club and is a cheerleader.
Following graduation, she plans to attend college in pursuit of a degree in radiology.
“I decided to run for Miss Sunnyside because I love our community,” Hernandez said.
“I have done many community services, and I really enjoy helping people,” she said.
If named Miss Sunnyside, she wants to further those efforts with a community service project focused on tutoring students in the local elementary schools.
Hernandez hopes the court can inspire youngsters. She wants them to find learning fun, especially learning subjects in which they may be struggling.
“I would like to help kids succeed in school, you know, make learning fun for kids,” she said.
“I am different from the other candidates because I have different goals for the community,” Hernandez said.
In addition to helping struggling students in the community she has set the goal of finding different ways for others to become involved in the community.
“I am proud of the person I am becoming. I was shy and now I’m coming out of my shell,” Hernandez said.
Cheerleading, as well as her experiences as a Miss Sunnyside candidate, have helped her build confidence and to become more self-assured. She’s had to be more outgoing and social when she wants to be more introverted.
The Miss Sunnyside Pageant will be staged at 7 p.m. Sept. 15 at the Sunnyside High School
