Port of Sunnyside to install rail spur

The Port of Sunnyside will award a contract to build the Port Rail Spur and Access Road Project.

Earlier this year, the port sold 10 acres of land to Crop Production Services so that it could build a fertilizer distribution center.

Following a public bid, the port has approved the contract to build the necessary railway spur.

There were two bids, with a nearly $90,000 difference and Railworks being the lower bidder.

The job does not just go to the lowest bidder, it also depends on the background of the company, said Project Manager Travis Jansen. The Port has used Railworks in the past and it was the lowest bidder, Jansen said.

Installation of the spur will cost $781,972.88, according to Jansen.

All legal requirements are satisfied, and everything is in place for construction to begin, Jansen said.

The spur is the third one to be installed in Sunnyside. It will be 1,600 feet long.
