Three men were shot on Monday

— The Yakima County Sheriff’s Office is being very tight-lipped about a shooting that occurred Monday about 11:30 p.m. in rural Sunnyside.

Sgt. Jerrold Towell, of the sheriff’s office, said yesterday at mid-day that there is not much the investigators are willing to release for fear of marring their investigation.

The shooting occurred at 240 Morse Road. Law enforcement became aware of it because of a 911 call from a woman saying she was the girlfriend of a man who later died.

Law enforcement caught up to the incident when the woman, whose name has not been released, drove her boyfriend to Astria Sunnyside Hospital.

Towell clarified a couple of points, but he wouldn’t answer questions.

First, he said there were three men shot in the incident, not two. He would not identify those who survived, but said Lance Ornelas, 30, of Mesa, Ariz. is the man who died. He expired after his girlfriend drove him to the hospital.

Towell said a separate vehicle took the other two men to a “different” hospital.

Towell would not say if they and Ornelas were victims only or perpetrators of a crime. He would not say if the individuals were related in any way.

As for the possibilities of others involved in this case, Towell would not say.
