Spartans bested by rival Leopards

Girls lose 53-24, boys lose 74-56

— The Spartans girls basketball team suffered a 53-24 loss and the boys fell 74-56 to rival Zillah last night.

The Leopards girls are undefeated, 7-0 in South Central Athletic Conference play and 14-0 overall.

They are No. 3 in the most recent Ratings Percentage Index, while the Spartans are No. 15 with a 3-3 league record, 8-6 overall.

Zillah led the girls game early, outscoring Granger 17-6 in the first quarter.

The Spartans continued to struggle with their shots, and the Leopards kept their own momentum going with a 12-8 second quarter for a 29-14 halftime score.

In the third quarter, Granger was only able to score 4 points, while Zillah added 11 to the scoreboard.

The Leopards didn’t show any mercy in the final period, outscoring their hosts 13-6.

Scoring a game high 14 points was Samantha Bowman of Zillah, only 3 of those points were a result of a trey.

Teammate Callie Delp tallied 12 points and Abbie Myers scored 11.

For the Spartans, a team high 10 points were scored by Naya Roettger.

The Leopards were 9-of-15 from the free throw line, while the Spartans were 7-of-8.

Also No. 3 in the most recent Ratings Percentage Index are the Zillah boys, while the Spartans are No. 38.

The Leopards are 7-0 in league action, 14-1 overall. The Spartans are 4-3, 9-6.

Zillah opened the game with a 22-15 lead and surged to a 44-25 halftime lead with a 22-10 second quarter.

In the third period, the Spartans made an effort to dig themselves out of the deficit with a 19-14 scoring run. But, the Leopards didn’t let them gain an edge, outscoring the host team 16-12 in the final stanza.
