Review Independent was a successful paper

I read your story about the closing of the Toppenish Review Independent with interest. There were several errors in the story.

The Yakima Valley Mirror, not the “Zillah Mirror,” was merged with the Review in the 1970s, not in 1999.

The company, which I owned, published Viva, which I started in 1984. We also published the Yakima Valley Business Journal, a shopping guide, Yakima Valley Visitors Guide and Wapato Independent, which was merged with the Review in the 1990s.

The company was not in financial trouble. It was profitable for the 41 years I owned the company.

I sold the company in 2006 to retire. I was 66 years old. Mike Lindsey, a newspaper broker at the time, was helping to prepare for the sale when he decided he wanted to buy the newspaper’s himself.

That company did very well over the years I owned it because all of us, owners and staff, worked hard and were involved in our communities. The papers won hundreds of state and national awards for excellence during our tenure.

Its subsequent owners, Lindsey then Bruce Smith, must accept their responsibility for the demise of what had been a strong, vital community asset.
