PROSSER The Mustangs boys wrestling team narrowly beat the Ephrata Tigers, 40-39, Tuesday at home.
The Mustangs won five matches via pin, one match by decision and another via forfeit.
The Tigers, currently ranked No. 8 in the state polls, won four by fall, a decision, an injury default and a forfeit.
Starting the dual match were Prosser’s Dalton Hudson and Ephrata’s Pelayo at 220 pounds. Hudson pinned Pelayo.
The Mustangs forfeited the 285-pound bout, and 106-pound Diego Conteras of Prosser lost the next match by pin to Kelvin Sager.
Alex Martinez of the Mustangs won the 113-pound bout via forfeit.
Ephrata took the lead when Clay Johns won the 120-pound match via a 6-0 decision over Jacob Torres. Johns is ranked No. 1 in the 113-pound classification.
Prosser’s No. 8-ranked Taylor Lake pinned Cienna Stagman of the Tigers in the 126-pound bout.
The Mustangs re-took the lead.
Another Mustangs currently ranked No. 8 is 132-pound Kameron Merrick. He pinned Carter Cox.
In the 138-pound bout, Mat Hudak kept the momentum going with a 10-0 major decision against Juan Mendoza of the Tigers.
But, Ephrata fought back with the next three victories.
Barceno Placido of the Tigers won the 145-pound bout with a pin against Jorge Uribe.
Corbin Sager (152) pinned Alex Eggleston of the Mustangs, and Will Anderson won the 160-pound bout via injury default against Clay Camp.
Logan Candanoza of the Mustangs is ranked No. 8 in the 160-pound weight class, but wrestled up at 170 pounds. He pinned Carter Mills of the Tigers.
Andrew Showman was the last of the Mustangs to secure a win. He pinned Ephrata’s Alan Macedo in the 182-pound bout.
The Tigers’ No. 8-ranked Mac Laird won the 195-pound bout via pin against Prosser’s Tyler Landa.
The Mustangs are at Quincy tonight and host Othello on Tuesday.
Next Thursday, they travel to Selah and Jan. 20 host seven other teams in the Prosser Invite, including Grandview, Sunnyside and Wapato.
The Mustangs are currently No. 3 in the Central Washington Athletic Conference.
