Isn’t it time for a city skateboard park?

Children using the Jerry Taylor Veterans Memorial Plaza are probably not the ones to blame for damages there. They are only looking for a convenient place with pavement to skate.

Owning the building across the street from the plaza, which is a wonderful addition to the neighborhood and Sunnyside, we have seen our parking lot used as a skateboard park.

Children using city sidewalks, parking lots or the veterans plaza are usually not old enough to drive to the park three or so miles out of town. And parents are not always available to haul children around, most of them work. It is impractical for children to be expected to board three miles, then skate and return.

In Sunnyside, we have a swimming pool, ball fields, soccer fields and a track. But not everyone is into sports at these facilities. Isn’t it time for a skateboard park?

A group of residents, Sunnyside Daybreak Rotary Club, city officials, Sunnyside Economic Development Association, Foundation for the Community of Sunnyside and Sunnyside Port District is working together to find a solution for our skateboarding children. Sunnyside Daybreak Rotary Club has raised funds by sponsoring the Sunnyside Ale Fest the third Saturday of June. This year, it will be June 23. Proceeds from this function are dedicated to building a skateboard park in town.

A skateboard park will draw kids off Veterans Memorial Plaza, city sidewalks and private parking lots, but will cost quite a lot of money. The best way for our community to raise these funds is by sponsoring the Summer Ale Fest and/or attending the Summer Ale Fest.

With the community involvement, a skateboard project will be successful.

Anyone interested in either volunteering at the Rotary Summer Ale Fest or financially sponsoring it, may contact me at 509-837-6700. And come join our Rotary club! We meet each Wednesday at Bon Vino’s at 6:45 a.m.
