Measure targets ‘ticketbots’

— Ticket re-sellers will have to become licensed to operate in the state under a bill that passed the Senate last week.

Senate Bill 6488 targets companies using so-called “ticketbots” to sweep up large numbers of concert, theater and sporting event tickets in order to resell them at a higher price.

“Anyone who has gone to a concert, the theater or a ball game knows that there’s a major problem with ticket bots sweeping up substantial numbers of tickets automatically and then selling them on both legitimate and less legitimate websites,” Sen. Reuven Carlyle, D-Seattle, the bill’s sponsor, said.

The bill calls for a $5,000 licensing fee, that could be waived if re-sell prices are reasonable and without additional service or other charges.
