What is it you like best about Christmas? I think there would be many different answers to this question. Like most people I was raised loving the light, the Christmas tree, gifts and yes Santa! But we did always remember that Christmas is really about the birth of the son of God.
In the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, it states in the Preface, “The wakeful shepherd beholds the first faint morning beams, ere cometh the full radiance of a risen day. So, shone the pale star to the prophet-shepherds; yet it traversed the night, and came where, in cradled in obscurity, lay the Bethlehem babe, the human herald of Christ, Truth, who would make plain to benighted understanding the way of salvation through Christ Jesus.”
I love to think of Jesus’ birth in a manger, the shepherd and wise men coming to see this Savior and to rejoice. It is a beautiful gift from God. But I like to spend time during the Christian season to reflect on the reason of Jesus’ coming and how it blesses us. I like to be a “wakeful shepherd” who now faintly perceived God’s word, but who is daily striving to see “the full radiance of a risen day.” You see, I like to recognize that God sent Jesus to be His representative to show us how much God loves us and wants us the be free and happy. Jesus, I am sure, spent a lot of time conversing with his disciples and filling them with Truth and Love. Teaching that God is all good and if we obey His commands, we will be rightly directed and protected. He even said, “If ye continue in my word, then ye shall be my disciples and you shall know the truth and the truth will make you free.”
Free from what? From whatever evil or Satan would curse you with – sin, sickness, poverty, etc. These are the very things Jesus healed, and he told us that the work that he did, we should do also. For we are the children of God. I am so grateful that throughout my life I have strove to follow God’s law and through my study of the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, I have had many proofs of God’s laws casting our error. I have been protected when a car came at me (I was driving too) at 100 miles an hour and I was able to avoid it. I have been healed almost instantaneously of the flu, skin rashes, burns, headaches, etc. So, Christmas is a reminder for me that Jesus came to teach us, as he said, “I am come that ye may have life and have it more abundantly.” What a wonderful gift God sent us when the Christ-child was born!
