All league honors extended in SCAC

Ely is named football Coach of the Year

— The fall 2017 South Central Athletic Conference-West all league selections include a large contingency from the Spartans, as well as nearby Zillah.

In football, one Spartan was named with all league selections in four categories. Robert Berger received Defensive MVP honors and was nominated for the Earl Barden All-State Award in skills positions. He was named first team running back and linebacker.

Brian Calhoun of the Leopards also was named Defensive MVP, and selected second team running back and first team linebacker.

The Coach of the Year is Spartans coach Gary Ely.

Also named with first team selections are Granger running back Joseph Soliz, offensive linemen Jose Mendoza and Cade Stewart, defensive lineman Jose Mendoza, linebacker Hernan Cortez and defensive back Ramon Olivera.

Mendoza and Stewart were also nominated for the Earl Barden All-State Award for linemen.

Leopards named with first team honors are offensive lineman Bailey Sparks, kicker Pablo Medina, defensive linemen Triston Cullon and Alex Cuevas, and defensive backs Sabastian Godina and Payton Whitaker.

Whitaker is an Earl Barden All-State skills positions nominee, and Cullen is nominee for the linemen award.

Second team selections include Zillah QB Drew Van Kemeseke, running back Isaac Vargas, offensive linemen Dakota Hibbs and Triston Cullen and defensive lineman Bailey Spark.

Second team selections for Granger include tight end Hernan Cortez and defensive lineman Cade Stewart.

Honorable mention for offense was extended to Godina of Zillah and Granger’s Juanito DeJesus.

Defensive honorable mention was extended to Cody Vance of the Leopards.

In soccer, Anahi Collas of the Spartans defense and Makilie Hernandez of the Leopards offense were named first team selections.

The Leopards were selected for the sportsmanship award.

Granger keeper Jasmin Rodriguez was named with second team honors, and teammate Yaneli Torres, a forward, received honorable mention.

Midfielder Karissa Delp of Zillah also received honorable mention.

Volleyball players with all league honors have also been named by the conference.

Spartans Lily Stewart and Naya Roettger have been named with first team honors.

Also with first team honors is Zillah’s Samantha Bowman, who signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Central Washington University on Wednesday.

She is the daughter of Sunnyside’s Harrison Middle School Principal Robert Bowman.

Second team selections include Granger’s Sophie Blodgett and Emma Stewart, as well as Leopards Jenny Nobbs and McKenna Burge.

Receiving honorable mention are Nizhoni Tallman of Granger and Kelsea Nunes of the Leopards.

Tallman is one of two freshmen to receive all league honors in volleyball for the South Central Athletic Conference-West.

The other freshman is La Salle’s Brooke Silvernail.
