Lose the trash this weekend

It’s time to put the winter of 2016-17 behind us and do a little deep cleaning around our Lower Yakima Valley neighborhoods.

This weekend, three communities — Zillah, Sunnyside and Granger — are planning free dump days. So, its the right time for residents to begin hauling out the trash and sprucing up.

Granted there are items that will cost to unload, like appliances. And, naturally, some items, like auto parts, chemicals and batteries, won’t be accepted. But there is still plenty of other trash and debris to be picked up and hauled away.

The timing is perfect to clean up the area. Get rid of the yard eyesores winter snow left behind.

You’ll be making the area more beautiful for the upcoming Memorial day weekend, when many will decorate the gravesites of veterans and families.

To make cleaning up easier, Sunnyside, Granger and Zillah’s free dump days are this weekend.

In Sunnyside and Granger, free curbside pick up is available for residents, if pre-arrangements are made. Granger residents will also have curbside service, for an entire week.

In Zillah, a public-spirited group is helping businesses with clean up of downtown storefronts and landscaping. The group is even offering to paint buildings, if needed.

That offer is above and beyond the call of community service. But it is being offered in the name of revitalizing the community, and that’s very worthwhile cause.

In Sunnyside, elderly and disabled residents are told city waste crews will come and pick up any bagged trash left at the curb.

No matter how you get the work done it’s a good deal. Take advantage of the cities’ offer and make your neighborhood shine.
