Mabton girls fall, 39-36, in state opener

Vikings come home after close loss

— A second state trophy for the Mabton girls basketball team is not in the offering this year.

Dayton, ranked No. 1 in the state’s Ratings Percentage Index at the end of the regular season, ended the Vikings’ bid for the trophy, 39-36, last night.

The Bulldogs took an 11-7 first-quarter lead. The Vikings battled back to outpace Dayton, 15-6, in the second stanza.

Mabton led 22-17 at halftime.

The Vikings maintained the lead and outscored the Bulldogs, 10-5, in the third quarter.

It all went wrong for Mabton in the fourth when Dayton’s defense stopped the Vikings scoring run and the offense resurged for a 17-4 scoring run of its own.

That run clinched the win for the Bulldogs and ended Mabton’s state tournament experience.

Leading the Bulldogs, scoring 24 points, was Stoney Andrews.

Teammate Josilyn Fullerton led with 12 rebounds.

Mabton’s leading scorer was Caitlin Rojas with 16 points. Astric Galarza chipped in 7 points, Michelle Zavala scored 10 points, Noemi Galarza tallied 3, Ivett Sanchez scored 4, and Britnee Guerrero and Rieley McCallum were held to 2 points each.

McCallum also hauled in 5 rebounds.

The Bulldogs outrebounded the Vikings, 38-23.

Mabton tallied 9 steals and had 13 turnovers, while Dayton had 29 turnovers.

The Bulldogs were 35.1 percent shooting, and shot 10-for-15 from the line.

The Vikings were 5-for-9 from the charity stripe and 30.2 percent shooting. They were 29.4 percent from beyond the 3-point arc.
