Man charged after eluding officer

Local swam across canal in escape attempt

— A local man appeared in Yakima County Superior Court yesterday, accused of attempting to flee a police officer.

Scott Alexander Azure, 30, is charged with eluding and third-degree driving while license suspended, court records show.

Azure was arrested Sunday morning near an irrigation canal near U.S. Highway 97, records show.

Officer C. Quantrell attempted to pull Azure over when he was spotted driving a black Ford Explorer 60 mph in a 35 mph zone, records show. The pick-up matched the description of a vehicle involved in a hit-and-run crash.

Azure then sped away from the 200 block of Ward Road, nearly crashing into a parked vehicle before driving down a dirt road and flipping the pick-up on its side, records show.

He then swam across a canal filled with waist-high water, records show. Azure then said he gave up and Quantrell told him to come back across the canal.

However, Azure again resisted when the officer handcuffed him and escorted him to the patrol car, records show.

“He said I could not detain him because he was enrolled and I was on his land,” Quantrell said. Yakama Nation officials later told police that Azure was not an enrolled member.
