Hermiston accepted into WIAA

— The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association approved Hermiston High School’s application to join the association.

The Hermiston, Ore. school will be a member of the 3A/4A Mid-Columbia Conference, which includes Kamiakin, Pasco, Kennewick, Chiawana, Hanford, Southridge, Richland and Walla Walla high schools.

The move for the only out-of-state school in the association takes place at the start of the 2018-19 academic year. The request was made in January, as Hermiston officials cited travel hardships as a primary reason the school wished to leave the Oregon School Activities Association.

Changes within that association would have had Hermiston traveling about 400 miles round trip for conference games.

Input from affected leagues and districts, as well as considerations from Idaho were all taken into account prior to the decision by the WIAA board earlier this week.
