— A love of community is prompting Miss Sunnyside candidate Victoria Cardenas, 16, to seek the coveted crown this summer.

Cardenas is one of 11 Sunnyside High School juniors, who will spend the next two and half months preparing for the 2017-2018 Miss Sunnyside Pageant on Sept. 16 at the Sunnyside High School auditorium, 1801 E. Edison Ave.

Cardenas said she decided to accept the challenge of running for Miss Sunnyside to gain experience.

“I feel that this experience will be of help in future and will open doors to more opportunities for me,” Cardenas said.

If selected as the new crown-holder, Cardenas said working with the Yakima Humane Society to help find homes for abandoned dogs and cats will be her community service project.

“I want to work with volunteers who work with the animals and with the families who adopt them,” she said.

The daughter of Sandra Trujillo and Gregorio Cardenas of Sunnyside, she is one of eight children. She has two younger siblings and five older brothers and sisters. Following high school, she hopes to join the National Guard to help pay for college.

“I’m interested in the medical field,” she said. She gained that interested from her mother, who works at Sunnyside Community Hospital and Clinics.

A Sunnyside High School junior, she is active in softball, basketball and Key Club, but her passion is music.

Cardenas has been in the school music program since sixth grade. She has been in the orchestra for five years, playing the violin.

For the Miss Sunnyside Pageant, Cardenas will take her years of music to showcase her talent, playing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” on the violin, of course.

She is sponsored by Adan’s Electric of Prosser and Aztec’s Heating and Air Conditioning of Grandview.
