— A desire to encourage health and fitness is one of the goals of Miss Sunnyside candidate Clarisa Calderon.

The daughter of Luísa Calderon and Alejandro Calderon, she is one of 11 of Sunnyside High School juniors who seek the community ambassador crown.

The winner will be selected during Sunshine Days, Sept. 15-17.

If chosen as Miss Sunnyside, Calderon, 15, will team up with Boys and Girls Clubs to promote health and fitness, working with middle school students.

She said her decision to challenge herself with the opportunity to be the city’s royalty involved a desire to “…bring up issues in the community.”

Hoping to one day travel aboard, she will attend Yakima Valley College’s Running Start program with a long-term goal of studying linguistics.

“I eventually hope to attend Central Washington University,” she said.

Calderon is in her sixth season as a member of the Sunnyside Rotary Swim Team,

“I’m excited we are hosting the Mid Valley Regional Championships later this month,” she said.

Calderon also swims on the Grizzlies Girls swim team and competes on the school’s wrestling team.

“I got interested in wrestling because of my older sister. Now I swim to keep in shape for wrestling season,” she said.

When not in the pool or on the mat, she is active in the science club and the link crews. She also is active in the community, having helped paint houses as part of the Loving Sunnyside Initiative.

Calderon is sponsored by Klompe Dairy LLC, El Mejor Taquito and Sunnyside Inn Bed and Breakfast.

For her talent at the Sept. 16 Miss Sunnyside Pageant at Sunnyside High School auditorium, Calderon will perform a Tahitian dance.
