WALLA WALLA When the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission meets at 9 a.m. Thursday at Walla Walla City Hall, they will consider a proposed extension to the Klickitat State Park trail.
The long-term boundary extension would add three properties totaling approximately 592 acres to the trail.
Two of the properties in Swale Canyon would allow State Parks to add recreation, protect view areas and resolve management issues on the trail.
The third property, at Harms Road, would provide space for a trailhead.
Current trailheads are at state Highways 14 and 142 near Lyle, Pitt, Klickitat, Wahkiacus and Harms Road near Lyle.
Klickitat Trail runs 31 miles through the Columbia River Gorge between Lyle and the Goldendale plateau in an area called Warwick. It is a multi-use trail for hikers, cyclists and equestrians.
Long-term boundaries are established for parks as part of public planning processes to identify lands that contribute to the recreation and conservation mission of individual parks.
The commission may acquire an interest in properties within long-term park boundaries through a variety of methods including agreements with landowners, easements, donations, land exchanges or purchases.
The properties being considered for the trail are eligible for purchase using inholdings and adjacent properties grant funds from the Washington Wildlife and Recreation Program.
Other items on the agenda include:
• Approving a simplified structure for current real estate policies.
• Approving a change in Washington Administrative Code to incorporate hang-gliding as an approved State Parks recreational activity, in response to recreation users and field staff.
• Setting a 2018 commission regular meeting schedule.
• Approving an emergency rule regarding charges for providing copies of public records, as required in House Bill 1595, passed by the 2017 Legislature.
Public comment is accepted at the meeting and other opportunities are available at http://parks.state.wa.us/154/Commission-Meetings-Agendas.
