Soar Merit scholars named

— Two Lower Yakima Valley students are among the first three winners of this year’s Heritage University’s Soar Merit Scholarship.

The recipients, their high school and their intended majors include Rocio Regis, Toppenish High School, psychology; and Hema Balderas, Wapato High School, nursing.

The third recipient is Adrian Araiza, A.C. Davis High School, undecided;

The winners will receive full tuition toward an undergraduate degree at Heritage University.

The scholarships are awarded to incoming students starting in the fall. Three more scholarships will be awarded this year.

“Having a well-educated workforce is vital to any community’s success, and we are committed to developing the talent we have in the valley,” Vice President of Student Affairs and Enrollment Celestino Limas said.

The deadline for the second-round of scholarship applicants is 5 p.m. Feb. 1.

Scholarships are open to first-time Heritage University students.

Applicants can visit and complete the online Soar scholarship application. They can upload a personal essay and letter of recommendation.
