Wapato man charged for stealing rifles

— A Wapato man is accused of stealing four rifles.

Juan Angel Salcedo, 47, is charged with possession of a stolen firearm and first-degree unlawful possession of a firearm, a probable cause document shows.

Yakima County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Salcedo Thursday after a home owner in the 900 block of Pomona Road reported numerous firearms missing, records show.

The victim said he saw a red Dodge Durango leaving the driveway that leads to his house and told police he thought the pick up belonged to an ex-boyfriend, records show.

During an investigation, police discovered the vehicle parked at an apartment complex in the 800 block of Tennat Lane, records show.

Deputies then found four rifles in a box sitting outside one of the apartments, records show.

The ex-boyfriend denied knowing anything about the guns, records show. The owner of the pick-up a friend of the ex-boyfriend, also said she knew nothing about the guns.

However, deputies pursued questioning, and eventually charges, against Salcedo, the woman’s boyfriend, records show.

“Mr. Salcedo stepped from the apartment and he was immediately very nervous,” Deputy Dustin M. Dunn wrote in the probable cause document. “Mr. Salcedo’s hands were shaking and his voice cracked as he spoke.”

Salcedo told deputies his fingerprints and DNA would be found on the rifles because he took them from the truck and put them in the box as requested by his girlfriend, records show.

However, Salcedo denied taking the rifles from the Pomona Road address of the victim, records show.

Salcedo has prior criminal convictions that include theft, assault and burglary, records show.
