Granger boys win; girls fall to Zillah

Both teams advance to 1A regional hoops

— The Granger boys basketball team won, but the girls lost Saturday night in 1A South-Central Athletic Conference-West hoops action at Wapato High School.

The boys cruised to an easy 65-41 victory over Wahluke to secure a postseason spot.

Shortly thereafter, the No. 3-ranked Spartans girls lost to league rival and neighbor No. 9-ranked Zillah, 57-54, on a buzzer beater.

In boys action, the 15-8 Spartans raced to a 10-point lead at the end of the first quarter, a margin that held through halftime.

In the third quarter, the Granger boys started to pull away, outscoring Wahluke, 13-7, and taking a commanding, 47-30, lead at the end of three quarters.

The Spartans would grow the lead by 8 points in the fourth quarter, to win by a final score of 65-41.

Jake Slade paced Granger with a game high 22 points and 14 rebounds to keep the Spartans alive in postseason. Teammate Ulyses Diaz added 17 points and 3 steals.

Other Spartans with points on the board were Trevor Smith with 11, David Soliz 8, Jake Stewart 5 and Daniel Nava 2. Wahluke was paced by Abraham Olivares with 12. Teammates Sergio Pineda added 9 and Nathan Buck 8.

The No. 11-seeded Granger boys will play the No. 14-ranked La Salle Lightning at 8 p.m. Friday at Davis High School, 212 S. Sixth Ave., Yakima.

Meanwhile, the Granger and Zillah girls both advance to regional play this weekend.

The Leopards play No. 16-ranked Elma at 4 p.m. Friday and the Granger girls play No. 6-ranked Bellevue Christian at 6 p.m. Friday. Both games are at Davis High School.

In the Zillah-Granger battle for the district title Saturday night, the Leopards hit a shot at the buzzer to win the game and take Central Washington Athletic Conference title away from Granger.

The Granger girls led the first three quarters of play, starting with a 14-9 run in the first. Zillah cut the lead to 28-27 going into hafltime, only to see Granger take control again in the third quarter.

Trailing 41-35 going into the final quarter, the Leopards put up 22 points in the final quarter while holding Granger to just 13.

Zillah was paced by Samantha Bowman with a game-high 25 points. Granger was led by Alexis Castro with 24.

Other Spartans with points on the board included Naya Roettger 13, Kaitlyn Roettger 6, Emily Stewart 4, Lily Stewart and Jayleen Vasquez with 3 each, and Keely Teel 1.

Zillah’s other scorers included Abby Myers with 11; Trista Takes Enemy 10; Karissa Delp, Lauren Ziegler, Maci Flavilla, Kaia John and Megan True 2 points each; and Addison Krueger 1.
