Granger girls to play Zillah for 1A district hoops title

Spartans, Leopards win semifinals

Zillah boys face La Salle

WAPATO — The Zillah Leopards will face La Salle Saturday for the district boys basketball title.

Tipoff is at 8:15 p.m. in Wapato High School.

Zillah defeated Warden this past Saturday, 92-77, in the district semi-finals. La Salle edged Wahluke, 62-59.

Nate Whitaker led the Leopards with a team high 32 points. He also had 8 rebounds.

Teammate Beau Widner tallied 19 points and Trey Delp had 17.

Delp also provided 7 assists.

Zillah’s Antonio Salinas added 12 point sand 7 assists.

J.R. Delgado paced Warden with a game high 33 points. Adam Richins contributed another 21 points.

Warden plays Connell at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

— The Granger and Zillah girls basketball teams will face off this Saturday for the 1A district championship.

The No. 3-ranked Spartans are coming off a 55-37 victory over La Salle on Saturday.

The No. 8 ranked Leopards enter the game after a 64-43 trouncing of the Columbia (Burbank) Coyotes on Saturday.

The rivals’ victories set up this coming Saturday’s district title game at Wapato High School.

Tipoff is at 6:30 p.m.

Granger’s Alexis Castro propelled the Spartans to the win over the Lightning with 18 points — 12 from beyond the 3-point arc.

Teammate Sophie Blodgett contributed another 17 points.

Granger opened last Saturday’s the game with a 14-9 run.

The Spartans continued held off La Salle, allowing the Lightning to score just 5 points in the second quarter.

Granger had a 30-14 advantage at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Spartans maintained the momentum, outscoring La Salle, 15-9.

The Lightning couldn’t overcome the deficit with its 14-10 scoring effort in the final stanza.

Granger’s Naya Roettger scored 5 points, Emma Stewart and Lily Stewart with 4 points each, Jayleen Vasquez with 4 points, Kelly Teal with 2 and Kaitlyn Roettger with a free throw basket.

The team combined for seven 3-pointers and was 4-for-6 from the free throw line.

Tatiana White scored 13 points for the Lightning and teammate Grace McGree scored 11.

La Salle’s Kamryn Fiscus posted 5 points, Lauren Desmarais 3, Amanda Kelley and Natalie Newman 2 each and Calliegh Lighy scored 1.

The Lightning combined for 7-of-14 free throws.

Meanwhile, Samantha Bowman led the Leopards and all scorers Saturday with 30 points against No. 10-ranked Columbia High School.

Zillah teammates Trista Takes Enemy and Abby Myers posted 15 and 14 points, respectively.

Zillah led 18-6 at the end of the first quarter and held off the Coyotes with a 15-10 second quarter.

Columbia came back from the intermission outscoring the Leopards, 14-13, in the third quarter.

But Zillah outscored the Coyotes 18-13 for the win.
