Benton REA to mark 80th anniversary

— A regional utility cooperative will mark its 80th annual membership meeting this Saturday.

The Benton Rural Electric Association, Benton REA, will celebrate the anniversary Saturday in Housel Middle School, 2001 Highland Drive.

Doors open at 8:30 a.m., with the meeting starting at noon.

The Lower Yakima Valley-cooperative’s annual meeting will not only include electing a board of directors, as organizers plan special treats for customers to mark the 80th anniversary, officials said.

“At the 80th Benton REA annual meeting, you’ll be able to talk to employees, discover new ways to conserve energy in your home or business, hear the winning scholarship essays, participate in a free health fair and enjoy a meal on us,” spokeswoman Elecia Copenhaver said in a newsletter announcement provided to customers.

Free day care will be provided, she said. And children can enter contests and possibly win cash or candy.

The company will give away 40 door prizes with a combined value of $1,775, officials said in a social media post.

The past year was also historical for the cooperative, as it marked the sale of holdings and services on Yakama Nation lands.

“Whether you’ve been to them all, or this year will be your first, we urge you to take the time to be with your fellow co-op members,” Copenhaver said.
