Granger wins team title, Zillah takes second place

— Granger clinched the 1A South Central Athletic Conference-West team title Saturday even before championship bouts began.

The Spartans racked up 331.50; Zillah was second with 270.5.

Granger had 16 wrestlers in the finals, 10 of whom won the title for their individual weight class.

Zillah had two champions — Isaac Vargas at 170 pounds and Chase Pigeon at 182.

Granger’s Jeremiah Salcedo defeated teammate Damean Flores in the 106-pound title bout, 6-5, to win gold.

In the 120-pound title match, Diego Isiordia defeated teammate Aaron Cardoza, 11-4.

Spartan Chuco Cisneros won the 126-pound title by technical fall, 16-0, over Nate Say of Cle Elum.

And Granger teammates Juan Isiordia and Juan Arteaga battled for the 132-pound title — Isiordia won by injury default.

Granger’s Niko Garza defeated Josh Say of Cle Elum by major decision, 14-5, for the 138-pound title.

Spartan Franky Almaguer lost the 145-pound championship to Jared Navarro of Naches by a 4-3 decision.

In the 152-pound title tilt, Granger’s Robert Berger won gold in a 7-4 decision over teammate Tony Almaguer.

Robert Vasquez won the 160-pound title for the Spartans, 8-3, over Josue Navarro of Naches.

Zillah’s Vargas won the 170-pound title defeating Granger’s Roman Olivera by a 5-2 decision.

His teammate, Pigeon, won the 182-pound title, 5-3, over Cle Elum’s Jack Moen.

Granger took the title in the heaviest three classes.

Juan Zamora pinned Cameron Reed of Goldendale in the second round at 195 pounds.

Noel Orozco won the 220-pound title, pinning Kolton Ruggles of Zillah in the first round.

And Jose Mendoza pinned Noe Perez of Highland in the second period of the 285-pound championship.

The only remaining title — 113 pounds — was won by Highland’s Manny Cisneros, who pinned Cle Elum’s Joey Moen in the second period.

The Spartans also had a third-place and a fourth -place medalist. Zillah had nine third-place and seven fourth-place finishers.

Both boys teams head to regionals at Highland this Saturday.
