OTHELLO The Huskies girls wrestling team hosted a mix and match competition last night.
Among the teams scheduled to compete were Grandview, Granger, Mabton and Prosser.
Among the grapplers traveling from the Lower Yakima Valley were several girls ranked in the polls released Wednesday.
Viktorya Torres of Granger is the No. 1 ranked wrestler at 110 pounds. Grandview’s Maria Reyes is No. 4, and Mollee Weddle of the Greyhounds, formerly of Prosser, is No. 7.
Zillah’s Olyvia Smith is No. 4 among the 120-pound girls wrestlers.
Jasel Perez of the Greyhounds is the No. 2-ranked 135-pounder statewide.
Mabton’s only ranked girl is Reyna Huecias at 190 pounds. She is No. 9.
Grandview girls wrestling coach Bob Johnson said all the girls at the Othello competition wrestled two matches.
“They won them all by pin,” he said.
The names of the opponents for Jazzell Tovar (100), Maria Reyes (110), Adri Graf (115), Paola Ramos (115), Jennifer Ramos (130) and Jasel Perez (135) were not available and Johnson did not keep times.
Mabton’s coach John Kilian said his girls had mixed results.
Vikings Reyna Huecias and Sandra Urbina, both at 190 pounds, did well in each of their two matches.
Huecias defeated Karen Meza of Connell via technical fall (18-1).
Huecias was ahead 4-0 in her match against a girl from Warden, but lost via pin with just 19 seconds remaining in the third period (5:21).
Urbina pinned Jacquelin Barbarin of Connell in 1:29 and Meza in 1:05.
At 155 pounds, Jasmine Prieto lost via technical fall (18-2) to Daniela Gonzalez of Kiona-Benton, and was pinned in 1:10 by Kennewick’s Ernestina Ochoa.
In the same weight class, Victoria Valencia was defeated via pin in 3:41 by Nakisha Guerra of Warden and was pinned by Gonzalez in 1:34.
Angel Reyna (115) was pinned in 2:56 by Hailey Felker of Wahluke and won a major decision (16-5) over Prosser’s Cindy Salgado.
Daisy Padilla lost her first match at 115 pounds via pin in 2:30 to Devin Gamez of Kiona-Benton and was pinned by Lizbeth Velasco of Toppenish in 1:24.
Also having mixed results were the Mustangs.
“This is only the second year for the Prosser girls team and they are learning quickly,” coach Jeremy Anderson said.
Eddlyn Ramangmou pinned Ada Rosales of Granger in 1:50 in the 120-pound weight class.
She was 1-1.
At 100 pounds, Elizabeth Torres was 1-1 with a pin in 1:10 over a Connell competitor.
Also at 100 pounds, Karina Mojica was 0-2, losing one of her matches via pin in 55 seconds.
“Karina fought hard, but lost to an experienced Othello girl,” Anderson said.
Martha Akimbade (140) was 1-1. She defeated an Othello competitor via a 22-second pin.
Salgado was 0-2. She lost her first match to Reyna of the Vikings and was pinned in 4:00 by Grandview’s Paola Ramos.
Five of the Mustangs are freshman.
Jennifer Rojas, the team’s only sophomore, was 0-2 in the 130-pound weight class.
Anderson said she narrowly lost one of her matches at the buzzer.
“Every chance they get, they learn and improve,” Anderson said of the Mustangs.
