Hunting seasons to open

— The biggest day of deer hunting is slated for Oct. 15 with the opening of modern firearms season.

State officials say there are more than 850,000 acres of accessible private land to hunt in Eastern Washington, as well as game management units on public lands.

Hunting is expected to be more difficult this year, with deer more likely to be found at higher elevations in Yakima County.

A week after modern firearms season opens, pheasant season begins.

Officials are releasing roosters in Grant and Adams counties, just in time for the Oct. 22 pheasant opener.

Call the state Department of Fish and Wildlife Yakima office at 509-575-2740 for local hunting information.
