Area harriers compete at Apple Ridge Invite

— Cross country runners from Sunnyside, Grandview, Granger and Prosser competed in races at the Apple Ridge Invite Saturday.

Sunnyside garnered ninth-place honors in the boys Varsity I race, 11th place in the Varsity II race and second in the Varsity III race, with scores of 212, 270 and 36, respectively.

Prosser boys earned 11th-place honors in the Varsity I race and second in the Varsity II, with 292 and 63 points, respectively.

The Mustang girls earned 71 points for third place in the Varsity II race.

Grandview tallied 295 points in the boys Varsity I race for 14th place and 209 points for sixth in the Varsity II race.

Granger was ninth in the boys Varsity II race with 230 points.


Griffey Sarmiento of Sunnyside had the fastest time of the four local teams, clocking 16:45.7. He garnered an 11th-place finish.

Ethan Green of Ephrata won the race in 15:33.7.

Silas Jasso of Sunnyside raced to a finish of 18:50.9 for 42nd in the Varsity I race, while Grandview’s Adolfo DeRobles was just ahead of him in 18:47.3.

Also competing among the field of 138 in the race were Sunnyside’s Derek Weaver, Areiel Gurrola and Francisco Garcia; Grandview’s Saul Campuzano, William Zilkalsk, Izak Garza, Jario Sarabia and Jesus Cervantes; and Prosser’s Jacob Saxton, Noah Dixon, Logan Hatfield, James Ashton, Paden Rude, Humberto Partida and Brandon Reyes.

There were 169 runners in the boys Varsity II race, won by Grant Van Valkenburg of Cedarcrest in 16:14.5.

Grandview’s Adrian Benitez earned sixth place in 16:51.3. Alfonso Price of Granger was on his heals with a time of 16:52.4.

Christopher Lane posted a time of 17:15.0 for 14th place for the Mustangs. Teammate Max Wahl logged 17:36.6 for 19th place. Sunnyside’s Michael Condie was behind him with a time of 17:39.6.

Other Lower Yakima Valley runners among the first 80 in the race were Prosser’s Jacob Torres, Harrison Moore, Bryce Martin, Seth Peters, Miguel Orr, Cristyan Zepeda and Andru Zepeda.

Top 80 finishers from Granger included Eric Ang and Gus Sanchez; Grandview’s Angel Morales, Ian Campuzano and Luis Ramos; and from Sunnyside, Angel Garcia.

Joe Rodriguez III of Sunnyside was the area runner in Varsity III, clocking 18:19.0 for 13th place.


In girls action, Dallas Borrego of Sunnyside, who crossed the finish line in the Varsity I race in 19:56.1, finished sixth overall.

Lily Tyrrell of Selah won with 18:14.1.

Mireya Sanchez-Cisneros was the next fastest from among the Grizzlies with a time of 27.06.7.

Grandview’s Lauren Binfet, a first-time cross country runner, finished the race in 23:09.01 and teammate Patsy Villagrana finished in 28:12.4.

From Prosser, Araceli Martinez finished in 26:01.9, while teammate Anne Christensen crossed the finish in 29:30.9.

In the Varsity II race, Kalen Johnson of Zillah was the first to cross the finish, clocking 19:18.5.

Prosser’s Justice Newhouse was eighth, finishing in 20:30.0.

Other Mustangs competitors included Nati VerMulm, Brenda Martinez, Natalie Norell, Ericka Rodriquez and Hali Ver Mulum.

Competing among the 85 runners for the Spartans were Viktorya Torres and McKenna Cruz, who clocked 23:11.4 and 28:37.3, respectively.

Grizzlies runner Yairel Quiroz-Jimenez finished in 23:55.8 and teammate Maria Carrillo-Espinoza clocked 27:38.9.

Area harriers will hit cross country courses again Thursday and Saturday.

On Thursday, Grandview hosts Toppenish, Wapato and East Valley (Yakima). Meanwhile, Prosser races against Othello and Selah.

On Saturday, Sunnyside heads to the Connell Invitational. And Granger travels for a meet against Connell, Cle Elum at Kiona-Benton.
