MOSES LAKE In a little more than a week, cross country runners throughout the Big 9 will compete at the District 6 Championship meet at Walla Walla Point Park in Wenatchee.
Yesterday, Sunnyside was among seven teams to compete in the final league meet of the season, earning seventh place in both the boys and girls races. The boys scored 172 points and the girls scored 183.
Eisenhower won both 5,000 meters varsity races with scores of 22 for the boys and 31 for the girls.
Dallas Borrego had the best finish for Sunnyside, crossing the finish line seventh among the girls in 20:34.76.
The winner of the race was Erica Simison of Eisenhower in 18:49.96.
The first three runners to cross the finish line in the boys race were Eisenhower’s Ronan Price (15:58.55), Alfonso Cuevas (16:20.50) and Jonas Price (16:34.98).
Sunnyside’s fastest runner was Griffey Sarmiento, who finished in the middle of the pack, clocking 17:33.61 for 23rd place among 54 harriers.
Michael Condie wasn’t far behind, earning 25th place with a time of 17:41.14.
Neither time was a personal or season best.
Emmanuel Ocampo clocked 18:22.67 for the Grizzlies; Abraham Arreola finished in 18:51.70; Joe Rodriguez III completed the race in 19:06.85; Jose Salazar-Suarez finished in 19:10.90; Silas Jasso clocked 19:28.42; and Arturo Palacios crossed the finish in 19:46.68.
In the girls race, Maria Cruz clocked 23:50.41; Alondra Garcia finished in 24:09.16; Lilian Froese-Rail clocked 25:30.46; Maria Carrillo-Espinoza crossed the finish in 26:48.06; Yairel Quiroz-Jimenez clocked 26:50.59; Sierra Cavazos finished in 27:17.19; and Mireya Sanchez-Cisneros finished in 27:32.48.
The championship meet is at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 27.
