— Thanksgiving is over.

Now it’s time to start thinking Christmas and where to get a tree as the centerpiece of holiday decorations.

For fresh-cut tree fans, a weekend trip to the mountains may be part of the family holiday tradition.

Families might also visit any of the local tree lots including the Cornerstone Church tree lot at 1104 Yakima Valley Hwy.

“We opened on Saturday with our Noble and Grand Firs,” Pastor Bob Widmann said.

He said the tree lot, which is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., is a fundraiser for the church’s community outreach missions.

In Grandview, Christmas tree shoppers, can enjoy a different kind of family outing at Bill Berry Farm, 3674 N. County Line Road.

The farm offers fresh-cut Christmas tree from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the first two weekends in December.

In addition, hay rides with carolling, bonfires and hot cocoa are also part of the experience.

If headed to the great outdoors for a tree, don’t forget to get a tree permit and a map of the area where the trees are.

The Sunnyside Bi-Mart store 110 W. South Hill Road has the $5 tree cutting permits available.

The permit is good for a tree in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest.

Children holding an Every Kid in a Park pass may receive a free Christmas tree permit by presenting the pass. For details visit

The permits are also available at all Forest Services offices and several other business outlets.

There are areas where trees may not be cut, which are listed with the permit applications. Families should remember that trees are not to be cut within 200 feet of state Highway 410, Highway 12 and Forest Service Roads #1200, #1800 and #1900. In the Cle Elum district avoid cutting trees along I-90 and Highway 97.
