Prosser board plans for new school leader

— The School Board will meet Thursday in Spokane with potential superintendent search groups.

The School District is looking for a new superintendent because Ray Tolcacher, 70, recently announced his retirement, effective at the end of the 2017-18 school year.

He is in his 25th year as the superintendent.

“We just need guidance, we need a pathway,” Board President Bill Jenkin said. “The more information we can gain the better.”

He said Tolcacher will be hard to replace.

“He’s done an amazing job,” Jenkin said. “He’s managed to make Prosser one of the top school districts in the valley and that’s through his leadership.”

Thursday will be one step towards continuing that leadership.

“We have to make sure there will be time for Ray to mentor that person, who ever we hire,” Jenkin said.

Selecting a new superintendent is the board’s only transition.

It will also need to appoint a new board president.

Jenkin won election to the state legislature during last week’s general election.

“We’re going to be picking a new president in December,” he said.

Jenkin said he may stay on through next February, when the district has a bond measure on the ballot for new school construction. He will leave that up to the board, he said.

Tolcacher said he doesn’t know what his plans are in retirement.

He and his wife have a home in Sandpoint, Idaho.

His primary focus is helping the district with its transition to a new superintendent in July 2018.

“I’m trying to get them to think about a search firm,” he said. “It takes time to do that. I want to provide enough opportunity for the board to get its ducks in a row. There’s plenty of time.”
