Flores helps team win with hat trick

— The Sunnyside soccer team defeated Eastmont, 5-3, yesterday, tying for the league title.

The Grizzlies got off to a quick start with Joel Flores giving them the lead after four minutes from kick off.

Eastmont responded with Sergio Bravo scoring the equalizer moments after.

Flores was on target for the second time in the 10th minute to begin Sunnyside’s three goal push.

The half ended with the home team leading, 2-1.

Coming out of break, Flores completed his hat-track scoring in the 43rd minute.

The Grizzlies built a three-goal lead after Luis Licona converted from the spot kick in the 49th minute to make it, 4-1.

The Wildcats made a late push scoring two goals within three minutes. The first came in the 59th minute and then in the 62 minute to make it a one-goal game.

But top-scorer Gonzalo Frausto gave Sunnyside a two-goal lead again after making his penalty kick in the 72nd minute.

With only eight minutes left in the game, the Grizzlies defense tightened up preventing Eastmont from making any goals.

“We came out pushing and pushing forward in the first half,” assistant coach Tim Gjefle said. “But we were able to come together defensively and as a team in the second.”

Sunnyside had ten shots on target. Keeper Carlos Hernandez record ten saves.

The Wildcats had 10 shots on target. Goalkeeper Alfonso Romero made five saves.

The Grizzlies (12-3) finish the regular season as co-league champions with Davis and bolster the top seed heading into districts.

They host Davis (13-3) for the district championship on Tuesday, May 10.


GRANGER — Granger soccer fell to Highland, 4-0, last night.

The Scots opened the scoring, with Benny Paniagua making a goal in the 24th minute.

Six minutes later, Francisco Magana doubled the lead. Teammate Missael Lopez made it, 3-0, in the final minute of the first half.

The Spartans were unable to capitalize on their opportunities to get back into the game. And in the 68th minute, Highland made it, 4-0, to secure the win.

“The players played a good game and we’re looking forward to the next game,” coach Salvador Mendoza said.

Granger had seven shots on goal. Keeper Chrsitian Salud made six saves.

The Scots had Omar Ramos make five saves. His team had 12 shots on goal.

The Spartans (5-9-2) travel to Wahluke for the first round of districts on Friday.

Granger coach Mendoza felt confident his team will be prepared for districts this Friday.

“Since the last time we played Wahluke, we’ve grown a lot more as a team. It won’t be an easy battle but we’re going to give it 110 percent,” he said.


MABTON — Mabton soccer routed La Salle, 10-3, last night.

The Vikings were coming off another high-scoring game Monday, having defeated Naches Valley, 6-4.

Stats were not available at press time.

The Vikings (12-4) finish the season as the No. 2 seed and head into post season this Friday.

They host Royal (10-4-1) at 6 p.m.

Mabton fell to the Knights in the lone encounter this season, 2-0.


GRANDVIEW — The Grandview soccer team won its final game of the season over Othello, 2-1, in overtime yesterday.

Stats were not available at press time.

The ‘Hounds (11-4-1) complete the season as the No. 3 seed and host Ellensburg at 1 p.m. for the first round of districts.

It will the third time this season Grandview have faced the Bulldogs.

The two rivals split the league series, with Ellensburg winning the first game, 3-2, and the ‘Hounds routing the Bulldogs, 5-0, last week.
