Inmates eligible for college aid

— A federal project will offer prison inmates financial aid to attend three state colleges.

Friday, the U.S. Department of Education announced Tacoma Community College, Centralia College and Seattle Central College will provide federal financial aid to eligible inmates for in-prison associate degree programs.

The federal funding complements an initiative already under way in Washington.

In April, Gov. Jay Inslee issued an executive order directing state agencies to implement policies aimed at helping released prisoners stay out of prison, find careers and contribute back to their families and communities.
