Firefighters honing skills

— More than 500 firefighters will train in basic and advanced wildland firefighting skills next week at the Eastern Washington Interagency Wildfire Training Academy.

It will be the state’s largest coordinated training effort, allowing the agencies responsible for responding to wildfires the opportunity to train together.

The academy is a joint operation of the Washington State Department of Natural Resources, the U.S. Forest Service, county fire districts and the Colville and Spokane Indian tribes.

The training session begins Saturday and continues through June 26 at Deer Park High School, 800 S. Weber Road.
