Spartans come up short at Highland

Granger missing key players

— The Spartans soccer team was defeated by reigning state champions Highland, 3-0, last night.

In the first half, the Spartans went toe-to-toe with the Scotties, before Francisco Magana made Highland’s first goal in the 20th minute.

Five minutes later, Magana struck again with a long-range shot to close out the first half with a 2-0 lead.

Granger had multiple opportunities to score in the second half, but found little success trying to score.

In the 75th minute, Alexis Aguilar scored a goal to put the game away for the Scots.

Coach Salvador Mendoza said his team was without a handful of key players, including starting goalkeeper Christian Salud.

“Grades kept them out and we had to adjust the lineup,” Mendoza said. “Even without the players we still fought hard against a very tough group.”

Granger had nine shots on target, with Angel Padilla making nine saves.

Highland had 16 shots on goal, with goalkeeper Jesus Barajas making five saves.

The Spartans (2-5-1) will face Kiona-Benton (1-6-1) next, this Saturday. Game time begins at 11 a.m.

“Hopefully we can get moving and start scoring goals,” Mendoza said. “We want to get back to winning.”
