Mustangs overpower shorthanded Sunnyside


PROSSER – With 11 of its 15 players nicked up or injured, the 4A Lady Grizzly varsity soccer team couldn’t keep up with host 2A Prosser in a 6-1 defeat last night to the Mustangs.

The Mustangs got all the offense they would need Tuesday night with two goals in the first seven minutes. The first was by Jennifer Inions, followed by Prosser teammate Marissa Cortez’s goal.

Despite all those early fireworks, Prosser still clung to just a 2-0 lead at the break.

“We started off pretty well, but we fell apart in the second half because of injuries,” said Sunnyside Coach Sylvia Villagrana. She noted the injuries forced her to switch players into positions that were new for them.

Prosser socked the match away early in the second half with three goals in the first 12 minutes, tallied by Hannah Johnson and two more by Jamie Fassler.

Hanna Clark scored the Mustangs’ sixth goal in the 75th minute.

Sunnyside’s lone goal of the night came in the 56th minute, when a Nena Milanez shot attempt ricocheted off Prosser’s keeper. Alexis Aguilar gathered in the carom and booted it home for a Lady Grizzly score.

Sunnyside mustered six shots on goal last night, while Prosser recorded 17 shots on goal. Lady Grizzly keeper Vanessa Loera hustled for 11 saves.

Sunnyside (0-2, 0-6) is dealing with injuries ranging from sprains to a hairline fracture. Even the Lady Grizzly JV squad is dealing with plenty of bumps and bruises.

Villagrana is optimistic her varsity will be able to keep enough able bodies on the field to avoid having to forfeit any games.

Life won’t get easier, as tomorrow (Thursday) perennial soccer power and Big 9 foe West Valley will visit Clem Senn Field.

“It will be tough, but we’ll push through the best we can,” says Villagrana.
