Bail set for accused counterfeiter from S’side

YAKIMA – Gilbert Borrego, 41, of Sunnyside appeared in Yakima County Superior Court yesterday (Tuesday) to face counterfeiting charges.

His bail was set at $5,000, according to court records.

Sunnyside Police Commander Scott Bailey said Borrego is also facing theft and forgery charges.

Borrego was arrested by Sunnyside police on Aug. 22 after police were alerted to his activities inside a local store. It appeared the suspect was using a counterfeit $100 bill to purchase merchandise at the store, according to police records.

Further investigation led Sunnyside police officials, who worked with the U.S. Secret Service on the case, to believe Borrego had been using counterfeit $100 bills for purchases and money exchanges since April.

Bailey said it is believed Borrego was forging the money at home. A printer and other counterfeiting tools were found there, according to the commander.

An arraignment for Borrego is scheduled for Sept. 29, according to court records.
