Outlook man in custody for May 9 homicide

Sunnyside police, with the assistance of the U.S. Marshal’s Pacific Northwest Violent Offender Task Force, have arrested Raymundo Casares, 21, of Outlook in connection with the May 9 murder of Oscar Raul Gutierrez-Mendoza of Roosevelt.

Detectives, said Sunnyside Police Commander Scott Bailey, were led to believe Casares played a role in the drive-by shooting and subsequent homicide in the 1400 block of South Sixth Street in Sunnyside earlier this month after following numerous leads.

Three days after the murder Casares was known to police as a possible suspect, according to Bailey. The commander said last Tuesday, May 19, probable cause was established and an arrest warrant was issued for Casares’ arrest. It was last Thursday he was located and arrested in Snohomish.

At the time of his arrest, police say Casares was in possession of two firearms which have been sent to the Washington State Patrol crime lab for analysis.

Bailey said Casares is being held on a charge of aggravated first degree murder.

He said other agencies assisting in the investigation include the Yakima County Violent Crimes Task Force, the Washington State Patrol, Mabton Police Department and Yakima County Sheriff’s Office.
