GHS boys notch first victory of season

PROSSER – Except for the No. 1 singles match, the Grandview High School boys’ tennis squad made short work of Prosser last Saturday.

The Greyhounds won the four other contests, picking up their first win of the season in three outings thus far.

The winners for the GHS boys included Alfonso Granados in No. 2 singles play, Jesus Gurrola and Anthony Gutierrez at No. 1 doubles, Esgar Valencia and Giovanni Ramirez at No. 2 doubles, and Nazario Serna and Devin DeLeon, who picked up a forfeit at No. 3 doubles.

In the one loss the GHS boys suffered to the Mustangs, Logan Alvarez took Cesar Solis to three sets before succumbing.

In girls’ play Saturday the host Mustangs blanked the visitors, 5-0, to keep Grandview winless on the year.

Despite getting shut out, the Grandview girls’ team received a stalwart effort from No. 2 singles player Alexandra Gonzalez. She dropped a 6-2 decision to Prosser’s Johnna Markus in the opening set, but rallied to square the match at one-all by winning the second set, 6-3. In the tiebreaker set, Markus persevered, 6-3.

“Alexandra came close to winning her match,” GHS Coach Ronda Penwell said of her No. 2 singles player. “She is showing great promise in singles play, already displaying improvement in her play.”

Grandview is scheduled to close out the non-league portion of its schedule this coming Tuesday with a home match against East Valley.
