2015 Congressional Art Competition open to all prep students from throughout this region

U.S. Congressman Dan Newhouse (R-Sunnyside) has announced the start of the 2015 Congressional Art Competition for the Fourth District.

“The Congressional Art Competition is a great opportunity to showcase the creativity of Central Washington’s young people,” said Newhouse.

“I encourage every high school student to participate, and I look forward to seeing the entries.”

All artwork must be submitted no later than Friday, May 1, to Newhouse’s Yak-ima or Richland offices.

The Yakima office is located at 402 E. Yakima Ave. Ste. 445, and the Richland office is located at 3100 George Washington Way #135.

Participants should call the Yakima office at 509-452-3243 or the Richland office at 509-713-7374 to schedule a time for artwork to be dropped off.

The entries will be displayed Monday, May 4, at Washington State University-Tri Cities in the Consolidated Information Center from 6 to 9 p.m., and then judged.

The winning entry will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol, and this year’s winner will visit Washington, D.C. to attend a reception.

Students are encouraged to submit various styles and types of art, ranging from paintings and drawings to photography and mixed media pieces. The artwork must be original in design, weigh no more than 15 lbs., no larger than 28” x 28” x 4,” and be prepared for hanging.

Two runners-up will have their artwork on display in the 4th Congressional District offices at Yakima and Richland. Each student may submit one piece of artwork.

The winner of the competition will also receive two tickets (for the student and a guardian) from Southwest Airlines to fly to Washington, D.C. and take part in viewing their art in the exhibition.
