Prestige Care administrator has become one of Sunnyside’s cornerstones

The Prestige Care & Rehabilitation administrator in Sunnyside, Mary Arthur, is last Friday lauded for serving the patients of the center for the last 30 years.

For the past 30 years Mary Arthur has given her time and care to the well-being of patients at Prestige Care & Rehabilitation in Sunnyside, formerly known as Hillcrest Manor.

A celebration in her honor was held last Friday.

Arthur started her career, working with people who could no longer care for themselves at home, in 1956 as a nurse’s aide at Mount St. Vincent in Seattle.

Becoming an administrator in 1971, Arthur set about to make changes in how the patients in nursing homes were cared for.

“In the beginning, a nursing home was a place for frail people to live and be cared for when they had no family members who were able to care for them at home,” Arthur said.

She said she saw a need within the system and pioneered the idea of bringing physical therapists into the system of care to teach nurses how to exercise patients.

Having learned about the concept of returning patients home, providing them rehabilitative care, during a workshop at Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup, Arthur said she oversaw the changes at what was Aurora Convalescent Center. Those changes brought about a new name for the facility, Northgate Rehabilitation.

“I was able to see the joy on patient faces when they walked out the front door to return home,” Arthur said.

She joined the staff at Hillcrest Manor in 1985, serving as the facility’s administrator.

During the past 30 years there have been many changes to improve patient care locally.

Arthur worked with local physical therapist Dyke Dickie in the early years.

“(Dickie’s) father was instrumental in building Hillcrest Manor in 1970,” Arthur noted.

Under her guidance, the care of patients became centered on the health of the whole person.

Arthur said the patients receiving care at Hillcrest Manor were often being admitted after open heart surgery, knee or hip replacement surgery, a fracture, recent stroke and other severe illness.

The staff has been focused on helping the patients recover and return to their homes.

“Patient-centered care is our philosophy…the patients and their families are at the heart of our organization,” said Arthur.

Hillcrest Manor became Prestige Care & Rehabilitation in 2012. Arthur said the changes that soon took place were the realization of a career-long dream. The facility was expanded and became a state-of-the-art care center, offering patients a wider range of services, as well as access to the latest in physical therapy equipment.

“We’re not stopping…we are looking at the joy of the future…that’s what it’s all about,” said Arthur.

Her lifelong goal has been to provide those being treated at Prestige Care & Rehabilitation with the best care available.

“It is a privilege and an honor to serve the community,” said Arthur.

This year, staff at the rehab center are studying personality types to better develop relationships.

“It’s the year of relationships,” said Arthur, stating giving comfort and care to the patients requires healthy relationships and an understanding of their needs.

“What will never change is how we treat God’s people…the continual love and respect that our 110 care partners give to our patients and one another,” Arthur said.
