White Swan prevails twice in league openers against MHS girls

MABTON – The Lady Vikings are still looking for their first win after a pair of losses to White Swan in their league opener at home last Saturday, but are showing steady improvement.

Mabton bats were hot, with the Lady Vikings scattering seven hits in each game of the doubleheader.

Unfortunately, the Cougars’ bats were hotter. White Swan won the first game in five innings, 18-6, and eventually beat the Lady Vikes in the second game, 16-8.

“White Swan hit the ball well,” said Mabton Softball Coach Jesus Sustaita. “We did a good job hitting also, but it wasn’t enough to keep up with White Swan.”

Mabton kept the errors to a minimum in the opening game with only three, but got sloppy in the second game.

“Errors haunted us once again,” said Sustaita. “We ended up with 12 in the second game.”

Rubi Gonzalez had a good day for Mabton, going 2-for-3 at the plate in the opener and pounding a home run in the nightcap. Cassidy McCallum also tapped one over the fence in the second game, batting 2-for-3 in the game.

Mabton’s Risa Navarro, who pitched the final two innings of the first game and all seven of the second, was 3-for-4 hitting on the day with a double and a triple.

In 12 innings of play on Saturday, the Lady Vikings scored at least one run in 10 of those innings. Sustaita said the scoring “...was a good improvement” for his team.

“Overall, the girls played well in both games and never gave up,” he said.

The Lady Vikings (0-2, 0-5) host Sunnyside Christian tonight (Monday) in doubleheader action.
