Lady Vikings fall to Wolfpack

WAPATO – The young Lady Vikings softball team was solid through the first three frames, but eventually lost to the Wapato Wolves 14-4 in six innings.

The Wolves scored first with a run in the bottom of the first, but Mabton came back to take the lead in the top of the third with some solid playing.

Lady Viking Rubi Gonzalez started the rally by reaching base on a walk, followed by a single off the bat of Crystal Cruz. With two on, Cassidy McCallum pounded a double to score the runners. She was later brought across the plate on another double by Risa Navarro.

McCallum finished the game 2-for-2 with a walk, a double and three RBIs. Navarro was 1-for-2 with a walk, a double and an RBI. Pitching, Navarro had two strikeouts and issued four walks.

The bottom of the fourth was tough for the Lady Vikes, as the Wolves scored six runs. Both teams scored once in the fifth inning before the Wolves finished the game with a six-run bottom of the sixth.

A big part of the problem for Mabton was its defensive play, as the team committed 13 errors. Wapato plated 14 runs on only eight hits and four walks. The Wolves got through the game with only a single error.

“Overall, we need to keep working on our fundamentals,” said Coach Jesus Sustaita.

The Lady Vikings will host White Swan this coming Saturday.
