Bickleton, Grandview, Sunnyside at 2014 season opener in Ellensburg

ELLENSBURG – And, they’re off! More than two dozen cross-country teams opened their WIAA 2014 fall seasons in Ellensburg last Saturday. Among them were squads from Sunnyside, Grandview and Bickleton.

The Bickleton boys were led by Troy Roberts in the 2.35-mile boys varsity race. He sped to a clocking of 13:11, 26th best from among the 150 harriers.

The fastest time was posted by Rodrigo Ventura of the Highland Scotties. He clocked the winning time of 12:15, seven seconds clear of the runner-up – Setty Pryor of the West Valley Rams.

Bickleton had just two other runners competing in the boys varsity race. They were Andrew Gannon, 47th in 13:40; and Joey Cardenas, 127th in 15:10.

Grandview entered just two runners in the boys varsity competition. Samuel Cuevas was the first Greyhound across the finish line, placing 30th in a time of 13:13. His teammate, Carlos Granados, finished 51st in 13:49.

Sunnyside, one of only 20 schools able to field a full five-man squad for the boys varsity race, placed 15th in the team scoring.

“We were solid - middle of the pack all the way,” said Sunnyside Coach George Paulus.

The Grizzlies’ best finish was recorded by Griffey Sarmiento. He placed 32nd in a time of 13:18.

The four other runners whose finishes made up the Sunnyside team score included Drew Gallardo, 76th in 14:19; Charlie Rosales, 95th in 14:31; Anthony Castelleja, 102nd in 14:39; and Arturo Palacios, 103rd in 14:40.

“We have one senior on varsity. Our team is really young. We were really young last year, but even more this year,” Paulus said of his boys squad.

In Saturday’s 2.35-mile girls varsity race, Jeniya Guillen was one of just two Sunnyside runners entered. She placed 20th with a clocking of 15:56.

The other Lady Grizzly harrier who competed, Angela Montes, finished 86th (18:32).

Neither Grandview nor Bickleton fielded any entries in the girls varsity race, which was won by Zillah’s Alexis Redfield (14:02).
