Great Grape Stomp set for Sept. 27

GRANDVIEW – The Great Grape Stomp will return to Grandview on Saturday, Sept. 27.

Team entries are now being accepted. To register a team of three, visit

The event will be staged at the Yakima Valley Community College Grandview campus, located at 500 W. Main St., at noon.

The Great Grape Stomp is a traditional celebration of the grape harvest. In Europe, townspeople gather to help with the grape crush.

In this updated version of the tradition, contestants hop into wooden wine barrels with their bare feet. The grapes inside the barrels are stomped furiously. Each team will have 30 pounds of grapes from which juice will be produced.

Costumes are an entertaining part of the competition. The team with the most creative costumes will be awarded cash prizes.

In addition to the competition, a variety of activities are planned for the event. Wine tasting, food and arts & crafts vendors and children’s activities will be a part of the celebration.

This year, there will also be a farmers market.
